For couples preparing to get married, it is their responsibility to provide a Celebrant with the necessary documents so that legal paperwork can be attended to. For example, Birth Certificates or Passports contain particular information relating to individuals that must be filled in on the Notice of Intended Marriage Form that has to be submitted to Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state the marriage is performed in.
In many instances, either one or both of the couple have been previously married, and therefore must provide evidence of the dissolution of that marriage e.g. Divorce Order/Certificate. These are examples of what I as a Celebrant are required by Australian Law to sight before I can perform a marriage ceremony. As long as this is done before the wedding ceremony, even on the day of the wedding, everything will proceed as planned. However, and this may sound a bit tough, if I haven’t sighted and recorded the necessary information, your wedding can’t and won’t proceed. But by working together, this should never be likely!
